ASSEMBLY EXPLORES TRUST IN DRIVERLESS

15 November 2017

In the second of two site visits for the Future Transport investigation, the London Assembly Transport Committee is visiting the GATEway (Greenwich Automated Transport Environment) project.

The £8m research project, led by Transport Research Laboratory, is trying to understand and overcome the technical, legal and societal challenges of implementing automated vehicles (AVs) in an urban environment. The project has trialled a 'level 4' automated shuttle on the Greenwich peninsula since April 2017 and is researching a series of different uses for automated vehicles, including driverless shuttles and automated urban deliveries.

Topics under discussion during the visit include: if people behave differently around AVs; how human passengers can take control, and how much attention they must pay; and how the vehicle responds to a no-win scenario.
