Halfords MOT Advert Banned
The lastest MOT promotion by Halfords pitching tests at £29.95, has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. The watchdog took issue with the statement "MOT's now £29.95 RRP £54.85" & decided that it was misleading to consumers.
Whilst £54.85 is VOSA's maximum charge it's neither a recommended retail price or a charge that all testing stations use.VOSA make no recommendations about the price at which MOT should be sold, the ASA decided that £58.85 was not a recommended retail price and this was wrongly being referred to by Halfords.
Halfords submitted that all it's 290 garages charged £54.85 for it's non promotional price, however the ASA considered that no evidence was suppiled to demonstrate this.
The ASA concluded that the advert was inaccurate & misleading.
The decision comes a little over a year after Halfords last run in with the ASA. In November 2012 their "50% cheaper than a main dealer" adverts were also banned after a complaint by SMMT led to the ASA finding claims could not be substantiated.
